Spinnnnning Screens

Where have I been on my blog?  I must have caught some type of flu or virus on Sunday….felt great Sunday morning, but since Sunday night been out of it with cough, congestion and fever…hence no blogs.  I’m looking at the screen now and it looks likes it’s spinning…so I’m going to keep this one short :-)  I know there’s a lot going around right now…guess I shook the wrong hand on Sunday.

Playing Catch with Cal

I had a great day at the Cal Ripken Clinic for baseball coaches today.  He and his brother Bill were awesome.  Very entertaining as well as educational.  Now I can say I played catch with Cal.  Here’s a quick clip of him tossing the ball to me in a drill they were teaching us.  Cal was playing Shortstop and I was playing 2nd base :-)

Seven errors to avoid if you want your ministry to last
January 25, 2008, 9:26 pm

This is an article by Rick Warren that I received in my inbox today. It was something that I needed to hear and I thought I should pass it along. It’s definitely worth the read!

=============================

A lot of ministries begin with a bang, then explode with new growth. But after the initial growth, they plateau. I have heard this repeated, not hundreds, but thousands of times from pastors I’ve talked with over the years. I’ve seen this happen with women’s ministries, men’s ministries, small-group ministries, children’s, singles’, on and on – that they have an initial growth spurt, then stop.

When a ministry plateaus, God is telling you that
you’ve reached the limit of what he’s empowered
you to do by yourself.

Rick Warren

God doesn’t want our ministries to stagnate. Not only does he want them to succeed, but he also wants us to succeed as ministry leaders. To help us achieve this goal, God has given us examples of errors to avoid – seven common traps of leadership – that Satan is most likely to use to keep your ministry from becoming all that God wants it to be.

1. You stop growing.

Whenever you find yourself resisting a new way of doing something, defending the status quo, or opposing a change that God has told you to make, watch out – you’re about to lose your place of leadership.

What’s the key to overcoming this leadership trap? You’ve got to continue to grow. Continue developing your skills, your character, your perspective, your vision, your heart for God, and your dependence upon him. Never stop learning. Read books and magazines, read and re-read the Bible, fellowship with other Christians, listen to tapes, and attend seminars.

2. You stop caring.

The leader who stops having a passion for ministry won’t last long. This is one of the subtlest traps in ministry – you go through the motions of serving the Lord because you know it’s the right thing to do, but your heart is not in it. That’s no way to serve God.

If you’ve found yourself in this trap, there’s hope. Just as when you want to restore love in a marriage, you do the things you did in the beginning. In other words, start acting the way you used to act when you were first in love. Even if you don’t feel passionate, act passionate. It’s easier to act your way into a feeling than it is to feel your way into an action. If you act loving, those feelings will come back. So, do the things that originally brought you joy in ministry.

3. You stop listening.

Learn to listen and be sensitive to others. Encourage the people you serve in ministry to talk to you. Let them tell you about their problems, their troubles, their fears, their aspirations, their dreams, and their hurts. Be open to suggestions and constructive criticism and look for other perspectives.

4. You get distracted.

Many things can distract you from ministry. Personal or health problems can distract you. Competing interests can distract you. Finances can distract you. Things that you think are fun and good and wonderful can distract you. Satan doesn’t care if you aren’t sinning while distracted, because as long as you’re distracted, you aren’t doing what God wants you to do.

But God wants us to stay focused. Never forget your mission. The Bible says, “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62 KJV) Stay focused. Don’t get distracted.

5. You get complacent.

Complacency is the enemy of a good leader. If God says go for it, stick your neck out! Never stop depending on the Lord. Stop coasting. Take some risks in faith. Push the envelope. Attempt something that cannot be explained in the power of the flesh. Say to yourself, “What am I going to try in my ministry this next year that I know is bound to fail unless God bails me out?” Unless God is your only safety net, you’re not truly living by faith. Depend on the Lord.

6. You become arrogant.

I’ve seen this again and again. When a leader becomes arrogant, it leads to ruin. When you think that everything depends on you, when you don’t think you need the Lord’s help in your ministry because you’ve got it all together, watch out.

7. You fail to delegate.

When a ministry plateaus, God is telling you that you’ve reached the limit of what he’s empowered you to do by yourself. You need to move from doing to delegating.

Involve other people in your ministry. Move from being a minister to a manager of ministers. Managing is a ministry in itself. D. L. Moody said it like this, “I’d rather put 10 men to work than do the work of 10 men.”

If you avoid these seven traps, you’ll go a long way towards building a ministry that lasts.

Where Can I Serve?

This is a question every pastor loves to hear. You can never hear it enough! There are always places in the ministry of the church that are in need of servants. It’s easy to see things getting done and feel like your contribution of service is not needed…but you couldn’t be more wrong! The truth is that there are many people serving in multiple roles…just waiting for you to step up and serve and take one of their posts.Check out this blog post by another pastor about serving in the church and spiritual gifts.

So here’s a list of immediate openings at LCC:

Lynn Schmitz needs an assistant for the fellowship ministry. She needs someone to tear down and clean-up the refreshment area on a weekly basis after the services. Email lschmitz1@comcast.net.

As you may have noticed, attendance has steadily increased since the fall. We are thankful for the increase and along with it comes an opportunity (and a need) to increase the number of greeters for Sunday morning. In addition to the outside greeters, we also need to have greeters inside to help folks find seats. If you are interested in helping in this area, please contact Mike Cerda via email at cerda_mike@yahoo.com.

We’ve recently had several regular faithful nursery and preschool workers either move out of the area or move to another ministry. We have needs for people to serve once per month in either of these ministries. Contact kristie.buttram@lifecc.us.

Our regular drummer will be leaving around the end of March, so Josh is searching for a new drummer for our worship band. Read more about that here.

Jamie is looking for youth workers…people who want to pour their lives into 7th-12th grade students. Contact jamie.mcbride@lifecc.us.

Donald is seeking additional hosts and/or leaders for our life group ministry. Could you open your home at least 2 times per month for a small group Bible study? Contact donald@lifecc.us.

SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??? It’s time to jump in and serve.

Genetics Testing

Sherri and I went to Fairfax this morning for a 1st Trimester set of tests at a Genetics Institute.  Because she is over 35 (barely) Kaiser Permanente requires this testing to be done.  The cool part was getting to see our baby on the screen this morning.  Technology has definitely improved in the 8 years since our last child.  Our child is only 2 inches long and yet it was amazing to see the detail up on the flat screen TV on the wall.  The great news is that there are no signs of Down Syndrome or other abnormalities…everything looks normal!  Too early to tell the gender…although I will admit to looking hard to no avail.  We’re at 12+ weeks in…that is usually around the 20 week mark…so I’ll be patient.  We are thankful for the healthy baby and fairly healthy pregnancy so far!  God is good!  Due date is now August 4th.

Sunday Night Post

Wow…what a great game…but the Giants really earned it…so it’s the Giants vs. Patriots in the Superbowl…how many points will the Pats be favored by?  Never know…it could turn out to be a good game.  Too bad for Favre…

Great Sunday morning at LCC!  Good crowd, good worship, good times!  God is good!

Youth group had a great retreat.  Focus was on finding their purpose in life and ministry in the church.  They did a little Myers-Briggs Personality assessment.  Funny how the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…my son is the same as me and my wife - an ESTJ.

Tomorrow is a holiday for the family…MLK Day…so everyone’s in a good mood tonight!

Enough with the cold weather…let’s have a real good snow and move on to Spring!

Midweek Post

Filed under: Church, Family, Just Rambling

Ok…I’m not transitioning to only a Sunday and midweek post format…but time has gotten away since Sunday! It’s been a full week already…but a good one.

  • On Monday I met with a guy who is praying about planting a new church in West Point, VA, which is between Williamsburg and Richmond. If God leads him this direction I look forward to being a coach from a distance. It’s always exciting to see new churches get started.
  • Yesterday, we made 3 trips to the county dump with junk from the cleaning out process of the trailer. I’m working on getting my garage back :-)
  • Yesterday, I had 2 ministry meetings - staff meeting in afternoon and pastoral advisory team meeting in the evening…I was meetinged-out when I crashed last night.
  • I’m already behind on American Idol - our family’s guilty pleasure…maybe I’ll catch up tonight. I’m just hoping the finalists are better this year.
  • Today, I took a mid-day break to chaperone on my 2nd grade daughter’s field trip to GMU to see a play, Charlotte’s Web. It was well done…but I’m not sure if they enjoyed the play or lunch at McDonald’s more. Either way it was fun to be with her and her friends.
  • We are under a Winter Weather Advisory for tomorrow…could it be? could we really have some measurable snow? I’m ready for a little of the white stuff!
  • I’m psyched about preaching this Sunday on Genesis 4. I’m loving this series we just started, In The Beginning. This Sunday we’re going to focus on how we deal with anger.
  • God is doing great things in our church. I can see His hand in so many ways. Exciting times at LCC!
  • Football Picks…the obvious Packers & Patriots for the Super Bowl…that will make for a great game.
  • We need life group leaders and hosts…people to open up their homes at least 2x per month for an LCC life group (small group Bible study). We are praying for a higher level of participation in 2008, but we don’t honestly have enough groups right now to accomodate everyone if they decided to join a group!
  • Basics of Life Class. We are going back to an older more effective format for our newcomers/membership class. Sherri and I are going to be hosting this in our home every 2 months. It will be an informal gathering where we share the history, purposes, and vision for LCC. We’ll have Q & A and refreshments. The first one in scheduled for Sunday, February 17th from 5-7:30 pm. Space will be limited. Email me at steve.markle@lifecc.us if interested in attending.
  • I’m so sick of hearing about the baseball/steroid scandal. Enough already.  And yes I think Roger Clemens is guilty!
  • I got scammed on eBay by a seller. He never produced the product and wouldn’t communicate with me. Unfortunately this was the primary gift for our kids for Christmas. I got the dispute settled yesterday through my credit card company and now this hard-to-find product was on the shelves at Wal-mart…so we finally finished up Christmas on January 15th. Everybody’s happy now! (and I saved $60…so I’m especially happy!)
