Food Drive Report!

In Church, Just Rambling on March 31, 2008 at 12:54 pm

LCC did a great job in response to the LCAC Food Drive. Thanks to all who gave!

Below is the email I received today:

Dear Pastor Steve:

We weighed in all of LifeCC’s donation and the grand total is: 603 LBS!!! That gives LCAC an additional $603 from our donor who will match every pound donated by one dollar.

Please pass on my deepest appreciation and may God bless your congregation!! Those who share their bounty will receive grace tenfold! And a special thank you to Rod for filling up our van with gas!!!

Great day

In Church on March 30, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Today was a great day at LCC.  Funny how a day turns out.  Lots of twists and turns during the pre-game :-)   Light issues, sound issue, video issues…but in the end it was all good!

What truly made it a great day were the 2 baptisms at the end of the service…

Andrew – a 7 year old boy who gave his heart to Christ last week on Easter Sunday was baptized this morning.

Mike – a young single adult committed his life to Christ at the beginning of ‘08 after his dad had spent years praying for him to do so.

It was great to see Mike & Andrew commit their lives to Christ and make it public today…God is good!

Relationships – Series begins this Sunday

We all have relationships struggles. When we are struggling with our spouse, kids, and co-workers, it brings a great deal of stress into our lives.

David who was one of the most well-known characters in the Bible had his share of relationships documented for us. Some of these relationships were healthy and some not so much. He was known as a man who had a passion for God…but as we look at David’s human relationships, we’ll find a man who struggled immensely.

Baptisms this Sunday

In Church, Uncategorized on March 26, 2008 at 7:10 am

Baptizing new believers  has to rank in my top 5 favorite pastoral duties.  I just love to see individuals boldly proclaiming that they believe in Jesus and are not ashamed to make it public.  This Sunday after the service is one of our scheduled baptisms.  If you have not yet registered and would like to be OR you want more information about what it means, click below.

Easter ‘08

In Church on March 24, 2008 at 9:47 am

An incredible day in the life of LCC! God was so good.

We had a record breaking attendance of 225+. Several people accepted Jesus as their personal Savior. The music was amazing. The celebration of the resurrection is truly the best day of the year for believers in Jesus.

The best moment for me was in the foyer after the service. A 7-year old boy was waiting with his mom to talk with me. He told me that he prayed to receive Jesus as his Saviour in the service. He had been thinking about making this commitment for awhile, but today he was ready. He then told me he wanted to get baptized next Sunday. We talked about what baptism means and I believe he’s ready for next Sunday.

Enjoy just a few pics below…

It’s a GOOD Friday!

In Family on March 21, 2008 at 11:16 am

Well…we just got home from Sherri’s ultrasound.  She will be 21 weeks along tomorrow.  The baby is very healthy.  It was amazing to see all the parts of the heart, the spine, the brain…and to hear the sonographer say it all looks fantastic.  What a great blessing and relief.  The baby gave us a little hand wave…got a nice picture of its bulging bicep.  Everything measured out great…within normal limits in every category…so we have much to be thankful for.Oh yea…what sex is the baby?  I haven’t been to shy about saying my preference.  In fact the entire family has been praying hard for a boy…but ready to accept whatever God has for us.  Well…drumroll please…  IT’S A BOY!  (no doubt about it :-) ) So we are all pretty pumped about this news!  God is good!

Favorite Easter Candy

Taking a break from my final touches on my message…it’s mid afternoon and my mind is thinking chocolate right now. So I ask…what’s your favorite Easter candy? I enjoy the good jelly beans – such as the Starburst jelly beans. You gotta love the Marshmellow Peeps. I’m not crazy about the Cadbury Creme Eggs. But my favorite Easter candy is my mom’s homemade chocolate peanut butter eggs. She’s bringing them down Sunday. Last year I had to settle for the Reeses Peanut Butter Eggs…not bad, but not like the home made.

Ok…back to work.

Easter Week is great for Pastors

In Church, Just Rambling on March 19, 2008 at 6:30 am

Truly…the most exciting week of the year for us preachers. Why? Kind of obvious, but

  • it’s the celebration of the most important truth of our faith – the our SAVIOR LIVES!
  • church attendance basically doubles – who doesn’t love that?
  • lots of new guests at church – love to meet people looking for a church
  • the music is always great – so many incredible songs about the resurrection
  • we just get fired up when we preach on Easter Sunday – how can you not?
  • the preparation is also fun…making sure you teams are on task…do we have enough ushers, greeters, donuts, bulletins, etc? not knowing what to expect is part of excitement.

Weekend Wrap

In Church, Just Rambling on March 17, 2008 at 8:58 am

It was a great weekend…

  • We had a great life group/Bible study at our home on Saturday night.
  • Great service yesterday with Communion and lighter acoustic worship set.  A good reflective type of service.
  • Our people are excited about Easter.  God has given us the space…now we are ready to fill it.  We’re praying for a big day with tons of guests.  We’re praying it will launch us toward breaking the 200 barrier on a regular basis.
  • Met a great new family yesterday who just moved from Georgia and found us on the web.
  • Josh has a great set of music lined up for Easter with the full band and some special music as well.  It’s going to be a great service all around.
  • Sherri, Zac and I started LOST season 1 last night.  We’re missing 24 so we decided to give LOST a try over Spring Break.  This is cheap form of entertainment…a lot cheaper than driving just about anywhere!
  • We’ve printed off our brackets for March Madness…looking forward to that!  It’s probably the best sporting event of the year…next to the SuperBowl.  We have a family competition each year.  We’re adding a little twist to the scoring this year…
  • I joined Facebook last Friday…I’ve got 60 friends so far.  Very cool…I’ve been able to reconnect with kids I formerly had in my youth ministries…most of them are married with kids…making me feel really old.
  • It’s great to have my wife home this week because of Spring Break.  She’s catching up on some house projects…but I’m making sure she’s not overdoing it.  She’s now 20 weeks along and Friday is the BIG ULTRASOUND.  It’s gotta be a BOY!  :-)

TGIF?

In Church, Just Rambling on March 14, 2008 at 8:44 am

I couldn’t sleep last night…not because I realized I hadn’t blogged all week :-) …but I had “church on the brain” going on.  This is a disease I contracted in 2001.  It got worse in 2002-03.  It comes in waves.  It flares up around Easter and Christmas.   My mind sometimes just won’t shut down and I lie in bed wide awake thinking of mostly church-related stuff.  It’s mostly creative ideas, dreaming big about growth and buildings.  Last night (remember this didn’t actually happen), we actually were given 10 million dollars and we purchased prime property on Smoketown Road in Woodbridge and renovated a warehouse type of building into an amazing meeting facility.  We were running 2 services and overflowing with people.  I was hiring additional full-time staff.  LCC was making a huge impact on the community.

OK…sometimes I get going like that in my head and I just cannot sleep.  One thought leads to another…you get the idea.

Anyway, it’s Friday.  I know for many it’s TGIF because you just want to get through the work week.  Being in the ministry is all whole different ballgame.  The ebb and flow of the weeks are so much different.  I try to get most of my work done so Friday is a somewhat easy day…sometimes that happens and sometimes not so much.  Regardless, even with the stress of the ministry, I do love what I do each week.  I don’t really think  I have a TGI__ day.

This was one of those weeks filled with meetings, planning, advance preparations, administration and more…and I’m kind of shocked it’s already Friday…

Sunday Night Post

In Church, Uncategorized on March 9, 2008 at 8:51 pm

It was a great Sunday…one I really enjoyed…

  • Really enjoyed the heartfelt worship this morning
  • Really enjoyed sharing the message – it was one that just came together easily this week and just felt comfortable being delivered. I thoroughly enjoyed and was personally blessed by talking about the giving nature of our God.
  • Really enjoyed watching my daughter’s softball spring training/tryouts. She’s got an awesome swing…watch out Zac here’s comes your sister!
  • Really enjoyed talking to a close friend on the phone and sharing our church’s need for light trees and a lightboard for about $800 and having him tell me it’s taken care of and the check is on the way…wow is God good!
  • Really enjoyed talking with all the great people of LCC this morning. I love our church…even those who forgot to set your clocks forward and missed the service :-) The message is awaiting you on iTunes!
  • Really enjoyed the enthusiasm of our people about Easter in 2 weeks. It’s going to be a record breaking day in the life of our church. Be praying and inviting!

Steve’s Core Values A-Z: Leadership

In Devotional Thots, Steve's Core Values: A to Z on March 7, 2008 at 8:34 am

Another one of my core values is leadership. Strong, godly leadership is essential in our homes and in our churches. When I think of examples of leaders from the Bible, I immediately think of Joshua. About 4 years ago I did a message series on Joshua and his fearless leadership qualities. Here’s a few of the leadership lessons from one of my messages in that series.

Lesson #1: A leader must learn to take orders from those over them.

Sometimes we might not like our assignment or our position or our lack of authority, but our job is to follow orders! Joshua went through a leadership boot camp under the supervision of Moses. He had to experience the life of a subordinate first in order to become a great leader.

Lesson #2: A leader must learn to be completely dependent upon God for wisdom.

Joshua got the privilege of spending a lot of time with Moses in the presence of God…imagine being able to witness Moses and God talk as friends! God wanted Joshua to learn the source of Moses’ strength…that it came from a personal relationship with Him. Why else would God let Joshua have a peek inside and witness this personal relationship.

Lesson #3: A leader must be willing to stand alone or in the minority when he is standing for what is right.

Remember the spy mission? There was a dispute in the report of the 12 spies. Only Joshua and Caleb believed their God was powerful enough to conquer the land of Canaan. God wanted Joshua to learn early on in his life that being a leader will often mean standing alone.

Lesson #4: It takes time to prepare to be a fearless and faithful leader of others.

Joshua’s prominence in Israel came only after many years of dedicated service to God. Joshua faithfully served Moses. Joshua proved himself worthy of being trusted as a leader. It actually took 40 years, but Joshua’s faithfulness paid off. Many people today want to be leaders, but they want to bypass the process of demonstrating faithfulness over a period of time. The steroid crisis in sports is a prime example of people taking short cuts to success. To become a great leader, we must be willing to put in the time…being faithful over what God has given us to do.

Lesson #5: A leader must realize the unique balance between dependence on God and confidence in the strengths and abilities that He has created in him.

Without question, God used the MAN Joshua to achieve His goals. But Joshua knew it was GOD Himself who would truly guide and direct Israel. It’s God’s power who rolled back the water of the Jordan so they could cross. It’s God’s strength which caused wall of Jericho to collapse. It’s God wisdom allowing Joshua to strategize against enemies. This is a divine mystery…God does use our faithfulness, our commitment, and our human capacities and capabilities. But in reality, without Him, we’ll accomplish little…and what we do achieve may turn out to be wood, hay or straw without lasting results.

Lesson #6: A leader must begin to serve God now in order to prepare for future responsibility.

It takes time & preparation to equip us to handle important spiritual responsibilities. We must spend time faithfully serving God in less demanding roles while learning from more mature and experienced people…we all need MENTORS! Joshua’s strength was deeply rooted in the lessons he learned from Moses – his example, role model and mentor.

Hello…

In Uncategorized on March 5, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Ok…a little sappy post for my wife here.  Hello by Lionel Richie was “our song.”  This song was playing at the local skating rink during the couples skate…which was our first time to actually hold hands.  Yes…there was magic in that first touch…way back in 1984.  Now some 24 years later, we’re still in love and David Cook did a real cool new version of the song last night on American Idol.  Of course, we loved it.  Enjoy…

the Frosty Temptation

In Family, Just Rambling on March 3, 2008 at 9:11 am

We, the Markles, are at day 20 of our 40 day fast from ice cream.  As a family, we love ice cream.  It’s our favorite treat. wendy-frosty.jpg But we wanted to give up something for the 40 days leading up to Easter.  Something we’d really miss.  So yesterday, my father-in-law was at church and we went to Wendy’s for lunch.  He got a Frosty with his combo.  He offered to buy each of us one…but we had to say no…because our fast includes milkshakes and frosty’s and the like.  It was tough to watch him eat it.

But every time that desire comes up, we have an opportunity to remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for us…and our little sacrifice of ice cream is ridiculous in comparison.

We are going to have an ice cream party on Easter to celebrate.  We were discussing each of us getting our own pint of Ben & Jerry’s this year instead of Easter baskets…

Weekend Recap

In Church, Family, Just Rambling on March 3, 2008 at 7:16 am

A great weekend. Love the changing weather. God is good!

  • Yesterday’s worship service was awesome. Great crowd and great music with our band.
  • At the end, I challenged our people with handing out invite cards for Easter Sunday. I had a few people after the service talking about personally bringing 50 people for Easter. I’m psyched about March 23rd. It’s going to be a record day in the life of LCC. I’m praying for many people to come to know Jesus on that day. Please pray for that!
  • Some of my favorite time each week is 10:10-10:30 in the lobby and then 11:30-11:50…I love catching up with people and meeting our guests. I love what God is doing at LCC.
  • My wife is now 18 weeks…close to halfway…she and the baby are pretty healthy so far…thanks for the prayers.
  • The kids and I spent the entire Sunday afternoon outside…basketball, softball…popsickles…what a great day to be out…man does my body ache today!
