The Bible.  THE book.  It’s complete reliable.  It’s without error.  It was written by men who were inspired by God.  It can be trusted completely.  That’s what I believe…and you won’t change my mind.

It’s the all-time best-seller and it has the power to change lives.  I witness this happening on a weekly basis.  It speaks to just about every situation you may encounter in your life.  It’s historical, yet practical.  It’s alive and relevant even though it was written thousands of years ago.  I’ve been reading it for about 27 years now and I am still learning all about it.  It’s still changing me!

The Bible is the textbook for our church.  It is the ulitmate guide to being a pastor.  Thousands of resources are available to the church to enhance our leadership, our ministries, and our teaching, but the Bible is the foundational resource.  Everything else comes in a distant second.  When there is a question in the church, the first place we look for the answer is not The Purpose Driven Church or Wikipedia or a Google search.  We must look to this book -the BIBLE!

As a pastor, the Bible must be preeminent in my teaching.  I have always preached from this book.  I’ve never preached without it.  In fact, I have very little to say of life-changing value without this book.  Am I a topical preacher or an expository preacher?  My answer is YES.  Don’t try to put me in a category.  Don’t waste time arguing about which is best.  If God’s word is the central focus and source of truth, lives will be changed regardless of style.  Just Preach the Word as Paul said to Timothy.

As a believer, the Bible must be part of your daily lives.  Read it.  It’s God primary channel for communicating with you.  You desire to know what God wants you to do?  Read the Bible…you’ll find the answers.  It’s better than any self-help book you’ll find at Borders.  Daily devotional supplements are great, but don’t let them replace reading directly from the Bible.  Read for life change, not to check off a box on your to-do list.  You do not have to read the Bible through in one year to prove you are a mature Christian.  Reading the Bible through in a year was never commanded in Scripture…so relax…pace yourself…but get into the Word.

Find a reliable translation (NIV, NLT, NAS, NKJV, ESV) that you can understand and dig in…it will change your life!

“You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.  All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”  2 Timothy 3:15-17 (NLT)
